44 is family.
For generations, Chicago’s 44th Ward has been a place where civic participation, grassroots organizing, and community leadership thrive. In the 1970s, the ward became a national model for neighborhood democracy when residents created a Ward Assembly that brought together delegates from precincts and community organizations to discuss issues, set priorities, and advise their alderman on legislation and neighborhood initiatives. The assembly fostered open debate, volunteer leadership, and a strong sense of shared responsibility for the community’s future, helping residents from diverse backgrounds work together to shape the direction of their neighborhood.
That tradition of civic engagement continues to define Lakeview today. The 44th Ward is home to an active and vibrant political community, where neighbors organize, participate, and take pride in helping shape the city’s future. The ward has also played a central role in Chicago’s LGBTQ+ history and advocacy, with landmarks along the Legacy Walk on Northalsted celebrating the achievements of LGBTQ+ leaders and trailblazers. From the bright lights of Wrigleyville to the welcoming streets of Northalsted, Lakeview has long been a place where diverse voices come together in celebration, activism, and community pride. The ward is also proud to be home to influential Democratic leaders—including Congressman Mike Quigley and State Senator Sara Feigenholtz, both Lakeview residents—who continue the neighborhood’s strong tradition of public service and civic leadership. Together, these traditions reflect the spirit of the 44th Ward: engaged, inclusive, joyful, and deeply committed to democratic participation.
